                                                                   School Year 2013-2014






  • The Principal Mary Bray attended a seminar for Principals on School Self-Evaluation on Thursday, 7th November in Kildare Education Centre.


  • Paula Gordon Numeracy Link Teacher attended in-service on Number in Kildare Education Centre on Friday, 20th November 2013. Paula Gordon also attended workshops on Problem Solving in Kildare Education Centre on Monday 30th September, 7th October and 14th



Evaluation Approaches and Methods


  • A Questionnaire focusing on Literacy and Reading was formulated by The Principal Mary Bray and Deputy Principal Catherine Leavy and was circulated to all parents.


  • Sixth class worked with The Principal Mary Bray to devise a pupil’s questionnaire, this questionnaire was circulated to the pupils in fourth and sixth class.


  • The findings of both the Parent and the Pupil questionnaires are available on the school website.






  1. The Reading Recovery Programme was introduced in Roisin Curneen’s first class.
  2. Michelle McEvoy undertook a Reading Recovery Training programme with Kilkenny Education Centre.
  3. The Principal Mary Bray made a successful application for a training programme for Reading Recovery for Paula Gordon for the school year 2014-2015.
  4. Rosie Hogan Reading Recovery Tutor gave a presentation to the staff on Literacy Lift-Off and Guided Reading.
  5. The Guided Reading Pilot Project took place in Paula Gordon’s third class and Deirdre Fay’s fourth class.
  6. The Literacy Lift Off Pilot Project was undertaken by the Deputy Principal Catherine Leavy, and Roisin Curneen’s in Senior Infants.
  7. Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) took place in Deirdre Fay’s class under the direction of Margaret
  8. Building Bridges of Understanding was piloted in Deirdre Fay’s fifth class by David McGrath.







At End of Year B.O.M The Principal Mary Bray presented:

  2. The Legislative and Regulatory requirements that need to be addressed.
  3. School Improvement Plan Sept. 2014-June 2015.




Policy Formation


The following Policies and Plans were formulated and ratified by the Board of Management:-

  6. Acceptable Use Policy regarding Internet Use.


The following Policies were reviewed:-


  1. The Child Protection Policy
  2. The Enrolment Policy
  3. The Attendance Policy
  4. The Homework Policy




Maintenance Issues


  1. Martin Sinnott Allianz Insurance conducted a risk management survey of the school on 19th June 2013.
  2. John Jones completed the Solas Safe Pass Health and Safety Awareness Training Programme on 27th January 2014. John Jones also completed a course on Manual Handling on 13th February 2014
  3. Apex Fire Limited have been awarded the Maintenance Contract for the fire alarm system.
  4. New Assembly Point signage has been erected for school fire drills beside the basketball court.
  5. The blinds in two classrooms, Room 3 and Room 4 on the main corridor and two infant classrooms have been replaced. The Parents Association agreed to part fund this project. On 4th March 2014, Parent’s Association provide €260 towards blinds in Room 3 & Room 4. On 29th April 2014, Parents Association provided €550 towards blinds in the infant classrooms.
  6. The tree on the border of the basketball court and the teachers car park was cut down following recommendations from Allianz representative Martin Sinnott, local tree expert Tom Roche.




Principal’s Report




  • The Second Grandparents Mass held on Tuesday, 24th September 2014. Refreshments organized in the hall by the Parents Association.




  • Cumann na nBunscol competitions : Scoil Mhuire Naofa beat Daingean in the boys final of Offaly Cumann na nBunscol on Saturday, 19th October 2013 in O’Brien Park . Teams were presented with medals by James Murphy, Chairperson of  Rhode G.A.A. Scoil Mhuire Naofa beat Tubber in the boys final of Offaly Cumann na nBunscol competition on 21st May 2014 in O’Connor Park. Under the management of  Paddy Guilfoyle the boys team achieved two back to back victories.








  • A Book Fair was organized by the Deputy Principal Catherine Leavy on Monday, 18th November . The amount raised was €2,427.10. Our School is allowed €1,456 towards the purchase of new books.





  • Following a directive from Minister of Education Ruairí Quinn,the Principal Mary Bray in consultation with a sub-committee from the Parents Association devised a survey on school uniform in February 2014. The Parents Association are currently working on the findings.






  • The Board of Management ratified a decision to implement a Teacher Exchange Programme on the 10th March 2014 between Eimear O’Donovan and Marian Lynch for the school year 2014-2015. The Teacher Exchange Programme will be subject to an annual review.


  • Annual Audit on The Special Education was conducted by Aisling Bacon Special Education Needs Organizer on Wednesday, 5th The current level of SNA support will be retained for school year 2014-2015.


  • Corcoran organised the first ever Confirmation Parish Retreat on Friday the 28th February and Friday the 21st March.


  • A letter from the Bishop Denis Nulty on the 20th of March 2014 stated schools will re-open on January 5th 2015 in line with Circular 0016/2014 Standardisation of the school year in respect of primary and post-primary schools. The Bishop expects that the schools will observe the holy day in an appropriate manner and resources will be provided by Faith Development Services to assist in doing this.


  • Michael Kane parent of Tessa and Stevie gave a presentation on “Engineering as a career” to the pupils in sixth class on Friday, 28th March 2014.




  • On Wednesday 30th April Robert Kellaghan facilitated a meeting regarding school parking attended by Barry Cowen T.D. Tracey Murphy Chairperson of the Parents Association and Mary Bray Principal. The outcome of the meeting was that Barry Cowen would contact the Director of Services to ask him to facilitate a meeting onsite and seek their assistance to develop a plan to address the parking issue and thereafter seek funding from appropriate agencies.






  • In May Paula Gordon secured a grant of €200 from An Taisce to fund a cycle training programme for the pupils in third class.


  • Paula Gordon organised a W.O.W. Day on Wednesday 21st May as part of the Green School Initiative for our fourth green flag the theme of which is travel.
