Cumann na mBunscol Code of Conduct

Games organised by Cumann na mBunscol are one of many ways in which schools are linked and mutually dependant. It is expected that such games are therefore played in a spirit which reflects well on the schools involved. In this regard teachers and those in charge of school teams have a responsibility to ensure that the following rules are adhered to:

a) Their team performs fairly.
b) Misconduct by players is not tolerated and dealt with appropriately by Teachers/Mentors.
c) Bad language or other forms of verbal abuse or insult directed towards officials, mentors or those playing for, mentoring or supporting the opposing team is dealt with in line with the schools discipline document and the rules of Cumann na mBunscol
d) Only team mentors or assigned medical personnel are allowed to come onto the playing field to deal with injuries at the discretion of the referee.
e) Schools are responsible for ensuring that supporters of their team obey the rules as listed in this document & adhere to the requests of Cumann na mBunscol events.

Failure to comply with the rules as listed the code of conduct will lead to sanctions against the school as listed below.

  1. Letter of warning to the school concerning the rules breached requesting an assurance that such breaches will not recur.
  2. Suspension from playing at a home venue.
  3. Suspension from a particular competition for the remainder of that years fixtures.
  4. Suspension from competing in any Cumann na mBunscol competitions for the following school year.

If a breach of rules is deemed by Coiste na mBunscol Uibh Fháilí to be sufficient gravity to merit sanctions 2, 3 or 4, sanction 1 may be superseded. A letter to the school principal from Coiste Cumann na mBunscol will inform the school of the Coistes decision.

Appeals to sanction imposed may be submitted by Runái Cumann na mBunscol Uibh Fháilí where upon Coiste na nGearan will adjudicate.

Fair Play Charter and Code of Discipline

Fair play charter for Cumann na mBunscol

  • We are playing for enjoyment, to be with our friends and to make new friends.
  • We promise to try our best to improve our skills, to help our team-mates and to obey the rules of the game.
  • We enjoy having older people watch us play.
  • We ask that they applaud rather than criticise our efforts of our opponents.
  • Remember that we are learning a game that should give us a lifetime of enjoyment.
  • We may have to risk making mistakes in order to learn, please give us that chance.
  • We thank the referee for giving time to take charge of our game.
  • We promise to respect the referee’s decision.
  • We ask the older people to do the same.
  • We promise to respect our opponents. Their team performs fairly.
  • We shake hands before and after the game.

Code of Discipline

The following code applies to all games and activities undertaken by Cumann na mBunscol or persons acting on their behalf.

a)  From time of arrival to and departure from all venues
b)  To all participating schools teams, be they school children, teachers or mentors ,
c)  Officials and board of Management Members

Section A

  1. Punctuality. Teams failing to field within 15 minutes of the official starting time at the designated venues shall forfeit the match.
  2. Illegal players. Any school fielding an illegal team shall automatically be disqualified from all Cumann na mBunscol competitions for the remainder of that school year.
  3. Incorrect information. Incorrect information on affiliation forms shall also merit the team’s disqualification from all Cumann na mBunscol competitions for the remainder of the school year.
  4. Schools’ failing to return affliation forms by the specified date; shall forfeit the right to participate in all competitions organised under the auspices of Cumann na mBunscoileanna for the duration of the school year.

Section B

The following offences shall merit immediate sending off and one match suspension from the next Cumann na mBunscol competitive game. Continuous breach of same shall merit double suspension, i.e. two matches

  1. Abusive language or abusive conduct to match officials.
  2. Dangerous play; dangerous play consists  of any action outside the rules of fair play that constitute  a danger to an opponent E,G striking, hitting or attempting to do the same with intent.

Section C

The following offences shall merit immediate sending off until the end of the match

  1. Persistent use of bad language.
  2. Intimidation of opponent, i.e. threatening by words of gesture.
  3. Continuous rough play and personal fouling.
